SEAL THE MEREENIE LOOP AND STOP BLAMING THE CLC
CLC Director David Ross says he is ‘disgusted' at the way the Northern Territory Government is blaming the Central Land Council for the delays on the Mereenie Loop Road.
“We all want to see this road sealed. Plainly the Government hasn't budgeted for it and chooses to blame the Land Council as they have done for the last few years.
“The lease terms were agreed but it remained unsigned because the Government wouldn't accept the CLC's sacred site procedures,” he said.
“These are exactly the same procedures used during previous work on the road under the CLP Government and there have never been any problems. These are procedures used all over Aboriginal land for years for infrastructure and development by Telstra, mining companies and anybody who is doing capital works.
“Our last letter was sent seven months ago and there has been no response. It took 10 months for them to respond to correspondence before that,” Mr Ross said.
“We've requested meetings and talks but the Government has just gone silent on the issue except for the odd cheap shot in the media.
“They are dragging this out at snail's pace and making us wear the public's anger. It's not on and we've had enough.
“Yet again we are urging the Government – if it really is serious about building this road - to just come and talk to us and get on with the job,” he said.
